Why IP Addresses May Resolve to Different Locations

You may get information on an evaluation that where IP addresses associated with the same evaluation or user resolve to different geographic locations.

IP addresses may be collected from different points in the transaction—for example, from the customer’s application or server and directly from the user’s device. Because the collection methods differ, the addresses and their geolocation results may not match.

Common reasons for different locations

Differences may be caused by:

  • VPN or proxy usage.

  • IPv4 versus IPv6 addressing.

  • Mobile carrier or cellular network routing.

  • Internet service provider routing.

  • Differences between geolocation databases.

  • The application and device using different network connections.

A geographic mismatch does not necessarily indicate fraud or a platform issue. IP geolocation is an approximate signal and may vary depending on network routing and the database used to map an IP address to a location.

If the results appear inconsistent after reviewing the collection source and transaction details, contact Alloy Support with the evaluation or Journey application token. Do not include any entity PII.
